House of Dior was founded by Christian Dior, a world-famous French fashion designer. He created the brand in 1947 with just 10 pieces of women’s clothing. Today it is one of the largest and most luxurious brands in the world. We will look at its history as well as what it has to offer to customers today.
House of Dior was founded by Christian Dior, a world-famous French fashion designer who is considered one of the most influential people in the 20th century fashion. It all started when he created a women’s collection for a boutique that had just opened outside Paris and which was an immediate success. With great success came greater demand, so in 1947 he decided to start his own brand – and named it after his name ‘House of Dior’. He quickly began designing ready-to-wear garments in luxurious fabrics such as silk chiffon and taffeta, as well as evening dresses in mesh tulle or satin ornaments. Initially, they were only sold in small stores, but in 1950 things took a turn for the worse when the company became the official supplier of couture salons. This meant that Dior was now able to sell his collections in department stores across Europe, which was a huge success.
The 1950s and 1960s were one of the most successful periods for fashion houses like this – they not only launched new designs every season, but also collaborated with popular photographers such as Richard Avedon and David Bailey to promote their products around the world through innovative advertising campaigns. In these decades, the Dior fashion house has changed as well: it started creating ready-to-wear alongside haute couture (high fashion), opened stores all over France and other parts of Europe, welcomed many young designers who shared Christian Dior’s vision of luxury clothing and even launched his own perfume line. In 1971, the fashion house was bought by a group of investors, including Bernard Arnault (later CEO of the LVMH luxury brand conglomerate) who said he had bought Dior because he had “the ability to make dreams”.
The 1970s brought many changes to the world: more women started working, wanted practical clothes for their new life as working adults, but still wanted them to be luxurious, which meant designers like Christian Dior had to adapt. They succeeded with suits with wide lapels and flared skirts; sets of easy-care fabrics; boxed jackets with matching trousers or miniskirts; dresses in jersey or washed fabric and jackets with shoulder pads. During this time, the brand also designed more men’s clothing, including pants that were slim but comfortable enough to wear all day – even in the office. Today, Christian Dior is one of the biggest fashion brands in the world: he has boutiques all over France as well as many other countries in Europe, Asia and America; his ready-to-wear collections are released every year (and some couture); a wide range of fragrances is available; line of makeup cosmetics; Sunglasses; handbags… and much more!
House of Dior’s biggest competition comes from fashion houses like Chanel, Prada and Louis Vuitton.
The future of the House of Dior brand looks positive: it has a strong customer base and excellent global recognition, which means it has every chance of further development.
